Palazzo Ducale

The entrance to Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, previously on Piazza Pallone, was moved to Piazza del Duomo as part of a vast refurbishment campaign on the luxurious rooms of the Gonzaga residence in the 1770s, as the rooms were now to become a suitable home for administrators, state officials, and sovereigns passing through the Habsburg empire.
This took place with the presence in Mantua of Archdule Ferdinand of Habsburg, assigned by his mother, Maria Teresa, to reign over Lombardy with his wife Beatrice d'Este.
