Palazzo del Podestà

Built in 1227 by will of Laudarengo Martinengo, nominated Chief Magistrate of Mantua, the building represented the administrative centre of the Municipality of Mantua.
On the façade facing Piazza Broletto, there is a Thirteenth century statue depicting Virgil at his desk (in dialect, "la Vècia").
Over the last three centuries, it has been used for a variety of purposes, including as a jail.
