Torre di Sant'Alò
Torre di Sant'Alò
Description
Information
It is located between Piazza Arche and Piazza Vigili del Fuoco, and at a height of about 20 metres, it was the building that historically closed the walls surrounding the city.
It was erected in the second half of the Fourteenth century, in the point in which the "fossato dei buoi" [oxen's moat] emptied into the lake, according to the design by Bartolino da Novara, to whom the city's defensive system is attributed.
The Sant'Alò Tower is divided into six floors.
After having lost its original defensive function - which is the reason why it was lower than other towers around the city - it was used as a wineskin depot.
The tower is open to the public.
