Palazzo San Sebastiano
Palazzo San Sebastiano
Description
Information
Work was managed by Gerolamo Arcari and Bernardino Ghisolfo, and Lorenzo Leombruno and Lorenzo Costa il Vecchio worked on the interiors.
The upper hall was home to canvases by Mantegna, which today are kept in London.
After the death of Marquis Francesco II the building lost its privileged role.
The precious furniture was therefore moved to other locations, and the building was used to house less important branches of the family, like the Gonzagas of Novellara, Gazzuolo, and Castiglione delle Stiviere.
From the middle of the Eighteenth century, it was used as barracks, and the original structure was severely contaminated.
Restoration work began in 1999, to restore interior and exterior decorations as much as possible.
Today, restoration work has been completed, and have brought to light the Loggia dei Marmi, the series of frescoes in the Crogiuolo Chamber, the Frecce Chamber, and the Sole Chamber.
